Popular pastry chef Paula Shoyer has published a new cookbook, The Holiday Kosher Baker (Sterling, October 2013). If you recall, I am a huge fan of her previous cookbook, The Kosher Baker (read my review here) I called it, “the bible of dessert cookbooks” for the Kosher eater since it is packed with 160+ non dairy desserts (that are incredibly delicious!) This new book does not disappoint. It has a dessert for every occasion and holiday. Whether it’s guests you want to impress or simply a craving you need to satisfy, Paula has got you covered. I am also extremely impressed that there are over 45 recipes that are Passover friendly treats! The photos are beautifully styled and demand to be eaten. (one delicious bite at a time!) As a sugar junkie I have complied a wish list of sorts with this cookbook. It’s a selection of all of the recipes I want to cook up. A few delicacies from the list are as follows: Babka Bites, Mocha Whisky Chocolate Bread Pudding, Red Velvet Layer Cake, Churros and HomeMade Candy Bars make the top 6 but the list goes on (and on and on!)

I run a food blog so it goes without saying that I cook. A lot. I am always stirring something in a pot, mixing ingredients in a bowl or frosting a cake. The spatula is probably one of the least thought about tools in the kitchen. This review is long overdue. I have never been this excited about a cookbook before. “Jewish Traditional Cooking” is everything a cookbook should be. It does everything the perfect cookbook should do. The writing is informative. The photos are visually stunning and grab at your appetite and makes you want to get into the kitchen so you could recreate the delicious looking dishes. Ruth Joseph and Simon Round have put together a fantastic journey of Jewish food that leaves you torn between wanting to keep turning the pages and wanting to test out the recipes. They cover the classics such as Meatballs, Potato Kugel, Knishes, Stew and Fish and bring in new flavors with Asparagus and Leek Blintzes with Cheddar Cheese and Vegetable Mixed Grill with Mint and Cilantro Dressing.
This Passover, forget about the potato. Instead, stock up on ingredients like spaghetti squash and quinoa for a modern updated take on Passover recipes. The No-Potato Passover by Aviva Kanoff, is a cookbook that as the title suggests, does not include potato recipes! When it first arrived I was eager to look through the recipes. I have to admit, at first I was disappointed with the food photography and design of the book. However, after looking through the recipes I found some great dishes that I would love to cook up this holiday. I happen to be a major design snob, but the fact is most people purchase a cookbook for the recipes and that is definitely not lacking in this one. There are plenty of low carb gluten free dishes that are delicious for Passover and dinner year round. A few of my favorites are,
Warm Mushroom Salad, Pomegranate Goat Cheese Salad, Thai Asian Beef Salad, Cauliflower Au Gratin, Pomegranate Brisket, Southwestern Sweet ‘n Sour Meatballs, and the Jamaican Jerk Chicken.
Bottom line: Although it’s no coffee table book, it delivers what it promises, which is an easy and tasty no potato Passover!

After I gave birth to my son, it took me several months before I felt comfortable enough to leave him with a sitter for a night out with the hub. Being an obsessive first time mom, I didn’t want to stray too far from home so I decided to check out BASIL PIZZA & WINE BAR which is in my neighborhood. It’s walking distance to my apartment so I could enjoy dinner without feeling like I was completely abandoning my son, and they serve brick oven pizza and wine, which just about screams date night to me!
We had to wait a bit for a table, but that usually reassures me that the food is good. With brick walls and nice lighting, it has a trendy and hip vibe. The tables are a bit too close for my comfort, and don’t allow for much private conversation; however, the pizza is one of the best in Brooklyn and it’s the only place in Crown Heights where you will be able to have a glass of wine with your fries. (SIGH) Those fries are amazing! To be honest, those fries are the reason I go back. They are perfectly crisp and topped off with a nice dusting of fresh Parmesan. It’s served with ketchup and garlic mayo but is good enough to eat solo (as a ketchup lover, even I was surprised I didn’t feel the need to slather it with the red stuff!). It’s a great place for a night out and makes for a nice brunch spot as well. I went there recently with some girlfriends and was pleased with their breakfast menu; it’s the usual selection of omelets, pancakes and pastries but it’s served fresh without the usual greasiness that often comes with a plate of eggs and home fries!
Bottom line: Pricey but they serve great pizza, fries, and breakfast grub. They have a nice selection of beer and wine and for adventurous eaters, they offer a range of unique dishes. I recommend the beet salad with goat cheese. The cheese is dipped in bread crumbs and lightly fried and melts in your mouth when you bite into it!
